All beers from this craft brewery are brewed without hops. Until the 13th century, beer in Europe was commonly flavoured with mixtures of herbs and spices known as gruit. Fifth-generation brewer Annick De Splenter studied medieval manuscripts to recreate a distinctive gruit blend that gives the beers their particular aroma and flavour; the brewer also notes that some gruit herbs were traditionally believed to have stimulating or aphrodisiac properties.
